Ganymede’s Commitment to Sustainability in 2024
Ganymede’s Commitment to Sustainability in 2024Delve into Ganymede's commitment to sustainability as we review the accomplishments of 2023 and outline the upcoming goals for 2024. Participate in a discussion with Gary Lobue, Head of HSEQ, and Richard Pearson, Fleet & Sustainability Manager, as they illuminate the critical sustainability pillars: environment, economy, and society. This blog aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how Ganymede Solutions not only prioritises emission reduction but also actively fosters empathy throughout its supply chain. In what ways do Ganymede create commitment to sustainability? Ganymede has recognised how significant a role sustainability will play in our future. Every supply tender we complete includes a dedicated section specifically covering sustainability and social value. In every situation, we must promise to do our best to lower emissions. We must also promise to treat our employees with kindness and fairness. Additionally, we should expect the same from our suppliers. What are the biggest achievements of 2023 for Sustainability for Ganymede? The most significant achievement in 2023 was the Board's recognition that sustainability required a new level of focus and resources to move forward effectively. This recognition led to the expansion of Richard's role to Fleet & Sustainability Manager. What are the plans for sustainable development for Ganymede for 2024?The business has committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative, a global program supported by the United Nations and the Worldwide Fund for Nature. This initiative will assist us in establishing a clearly defined path to reduce emissions in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement and, ultimately, achieve Net Zero. Currently, we are compiling our baseline figures for 2023 and plan to submit our long-term strategy in the next few months. What are the benefits of sustainable practices in business?Sustainable practices help the environment by reducing greenhouse gases and waste that cannot be recycled. However, sustainability comprises three crucial pillars: Environment, Economic, and Social Sustainability.Social Sustainability focuses on assessing how the business influences individuals, whether they are clients, employees, sub-contractors, or members of the public. The goal is to improve people's health and happiness, which the business has been focused on for many years. Whether through the implementation of Agile Working or the introduction of Supplier Forums, all efforts contribute to enhancing our collective growth without compromising mental health. Richard, what measures have you taken to ensure the organisation's fleet is environmentally sustainable?"While there is a collective push towards using alternative-fuelled vehicles such as electric and hydrogen, the operational requirements of our clients sometimes hinder wholesale changes. Although our company car policy has transitioned to 100% electric, our dependence on diesel-fuelled commercial vehicles persists. Consequently, we dedicate considerable effort to exploring innovations that can help manage the fleet more efficiently and reduce fuel consumption. In addition to optimising vehicle utilisation, the most significant impact on emissions reduction lies in managing the way vehicles are driven. To address this, we have made substantial investments in a telemetry system. This system not only enables us to track our vehicles but also identifies areas for improvement in each driver's actions, allowing us to provide coaching that fosters positive behaviour changes.Exploring new diesel alternatives is also part of our strategy. Some promising options could enable us to maintain our current fleet while achieving emissions reductions of up to 90%.Currently, the most viable option is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), essentially recycled cooking oil. Although available in volumes that support the switch, it is not widely accessible at filling stations and typically requires bulk purchases. We are actively collaborating with our clients and supply chain to find ways to implement this change in the future."Gary, as head of HSEQ, how are Ganymede employees encouraged to actively participate in promoting a culture of safety and sustainability?"We are committed to being a responsible and dedicated company, aligning with Network Rail's sustainable procurement principles. Our goal is to integrate our safety vision consistently with these principles, ensuring proactive measures are taken. Our vision for Health, Safety, and Wellbeing prioritises the protection, safety, and respect for all individuals involved in our industry, encompassing construction, maintenance, operational activities, and the public. This collective approach contributes to a sustainable future.Core principles such as 'doing no harm' and 'doing some good' are values we seek to promote across the entire company and workforce. As a business, we are dedicated to embedding these principles and processes into our safety, quality, and environmental management systems. Regular reviews and updates are crucial to align with our vision of a sustainable future. To eliminate waste and promote safety, we have implemented proactive initiatives, reducing the impact on human resources due to accidents and illness. Our ongoing commitment is to prioritise the health and wellbeing of our operatives, supported by our HSEQ and HR Management teams. Internal engagement regarding sustainability understanding is a top priority for our business. We strive to follow and promote good sustainability practices, ensuring our activities are sustained without adverse impacts on the community, environment, or global society. Additionally, we are dedicated to advising our clients on sustainable practices within their own organisations.Recognising the importance of improving sustainability in environmental and social performance, we ensure our workforce receives information, briefings, and training to comprehend the entire subject. Our company induction is being enhanced to include this topic, and we are developing an e-learning module for online accessibility. We are also exploring the creation of a simple acronym, SWEEP, to cover policies for each Environmental and Sustainable Development focus area, making it easy to remember."Find out more about a career with Ganymede today. Leading labour supplier to the rail industry converts used PPE/Workwear into Energy
Leading labour supplier to the rail industry converts used PPE / Workwear into EnergyGanymede Solutions continually look for new initiatives that support them in achieving their Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, which includes considering environmental impact. As a leading supplier of labour to the rail industry, the sourcing, use and disposal of PPE/Workwear was a key area identified to support this strategy. Together with specialist rail PPE supplier, Safeaid, Ganymede Solutions considered the lifecycle of PPE/Workwear and implemented new recycling facilities. The goals were, firstly, to reduce the amount of PPE/Workwear that is not looked after properly and therefore disposed of before it needs to be. Then, to provide an alternative option to operatives and staff that prevents used clothing going into landfill. Through the recycling operation, instead of ending up in landfill, the shredded textiles are baled and sent on for further processing so that they become refuse derived fuel (RDF). This means that the textile shreds are incinerated to produce steam, which is converted into energy. An education into product lifecycle Ganymede Solutions will be providing learning resources to staff to ensure all PPE is looked after correctly and lasts for as long as possible. Furthermore, the process will be made as easy as possible for operatives to utilise this recycling scheme by having ‘drop and swap’ facilities in eight Ganymede locations across the UK, starting with its office in Wales. The aim is for 25% of staff to use the recycling facility throughout the first year. Gary Lobue, Head of HSEQ said of the new initiative: “We are absolutely thrilled to get this project off the ground, reducing waste to landfill is something we have been working on within our offices, but being able to provide this recycling service to our operatives and staff is fantastic and a testament to our dedication to our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.” Richard Bowen, Managing Director at Safeaid commented: “We are delighted to support Ganymede with PPE recycling facilities. As a business we’re committed to delivering environmentally responsible solutions to our customers to help them achieve their sustainability goals. These include our Signal carbon neutral PPE range which Ganymede also purchase for their workforce.”

Ganymede Proudly Supports Young Rail Professionals and Women in Rail’s Sizzling Summer BBQSupporting Early Careers and Women in RailWe recently attended the Women in Rail East Midlands and Young Rail Professionals social event and summer BBQ at the Derby Conference Centre. The event offered valuable insight into the initiatives and opportunities championed by both organisations to support and develop careers in the rail industry.During the event, we heard from both groups including how Young Rail Professionals help influence and promote employment in the rail sector for people in their first 10 years of service, discussing what opportunities there are for people who fit this criteria. Women in Rail focused on how they support women across the UK by creating more opportunities to enter and progress in the rail sector.Championing Equality and OpportunityWe got involved as many members of the company are also part of Women in Rail across the country and help by attending and organising the events, which demonstrates our proactiveness with these sorts of events. At Ganymede, we believe that everyone should have the same opportunities and chances to have a role in the rail sector.Attendees of the WIR event including Charlotte Cruise, Client Relationship Manager at GanymedeThe historical venueGanymede was proud to attend the event hosted at our Head office, Derby Conference Centre. Strengthening Compliance to Drive Safety and Excellence in the UK Rail Sector
Strengthening Compliance to Drive Safety and Excellence in the UK Rail SectorThe UK rail industry operates in one of the most safety-critical environments in the country. With thousands of lives and billions in infrastructure at stake every day, the sector has undergone significant change over the last decade to improve how it manages risk, competency, and supplier assurance. At Ganymede Solutions, we recognise that meeting these ever-evolving requirements means investing not just in systems, but in people. That is why the continued development of our compliance function has remained a top priority. The Role of Compliance in Supporting Railway 200Railway 200 is a UK-wide initiative celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. It aims to inspire a new generation of pioneering talent to pursue careers in rail and to highlight the diverse range of roles available within the industry.Effective compliance management is vital to the safe and successful operation of the railway. Ganymede’s compliance team ensures that all regulatory obligations are met, risks are proactively identified and mitigated, and that continuous improvement is embedded into our daily operations. At Ganymede, this is demonstrated not only through our RISQS accreditation but also through our ongoing commitment to a suite of ISO certifications, covering Quality Management, Health & Safety, Environment & Sustainability, and Information Security. In addition, our compliance approach ensures we remain committed to fair, transparent, and responsible employment practices, from how we support our people to how we manage our supply chain, upholding the highest ethical standards across all our operations.Building a Strong Compliance Team to Meet Railway 200 Standards at GanymedeSince Lauren Bradford joined Ganymede, she has played a key role in developing the compliance team to support the company’s commitment to high-quality compliance standards. The team has grown to meet increasing regulatory demands and to ensure that all aspects of Ganymede’s operations uphold the highest standards of governance.Developing a Comprehensive Compliance Function in Response to Industry ChangesWhen Lauren joined Ganymede in 2013, the HSEQ function was a small, three-person team responsible for Health & Safety, Compliance, Training, and Fleet Management. As the business has grown and the rail industry has evolved, Ganymede has developed dedicated teams for each of these areas, including a standalone Health & Safety team and a separate Fleet team, each focusing on their specialist disciplines.Over the last decade, the compliance function has expanded its focus to key areas such as regulatory adherence, risk management, and assurance. During this period, the team has successfully navigated several significant industry changes, including:The transition from the National Competence and Certification Authority (NCCA) to the Sentinel system, which marked a move from manual, paper-based Personal Track Safety (PTS) cards to a smart ID and digital platform for real-time competency verification. The transformation of the supplier assurance scheme from Link-Up to RISQS (Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme), a change led by Network Rail to enhance transparency and governance, transferring management to the Railway Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), a not-for-profit organisation owned by and serving Britain’s rail industrySignificant updates to Fatigue Management standards aimed at further mitigating fatigue risks across the industry, alongside enhanced Drug and Alcohol standards designed to better protect the safety of those working in the rail sector, in line with Network Rail’s Life Saving Rules. The compliance team remains responsible for staying up to date with these evolving requirements and ensuring Ganymede’s continued regulatory compliance in a rapidly changing industry landscape.A Collaborative Approach to Regulatory ExcellenceUnder Lauren’s leadership, the compliance team at Ganymede works closely with our internal Health & Safety and Fleet Management teams to ensure a joined-up approach to risk management and operational safety. But our collaboration doesn’t stop there. We also work proactively with industry bodies, clients, and suppliers to stay aligned with best practices and emerging standards across the rail sector. By engaging with key stakeholders and remaining actively involved in industry-wide initiatives, we are able to continuously build on our capabilities, respond to regulatory changes with agility, and help shape a safer, more sustainable rail network. This collaborative mindset supports not only our internal compliance goals but also contributes meaningfully to the broader vision of Railway 200, rising to new challenges and championing a stronger, safer rail industry for all.Read our previous blog Railway 200 blog: Mental Health Matters: 200 Years of Rail, 200 Years of People

To honour the occasion, we sat down with Colin to reflect on his two-decade journey, his proudest achievements, and what’s kept him motivated over the years.Reflecting on Two Decades of ExcellenceWhen asked what he is most proud of over the last 20 years, Colin shared“I’ve been awarded Top Consultant twice and Top Contract Consultant several times during my career with Ganymede. These are the achievements I am most proud of. We employ excellent Recruitment Consultants here at Ganymede who build fantastic relationships with clients and candidates, so to be the best of the best is as good as it gets for me.”Andy Pendlebury, Chairman and CEO of RTC Group Plc and ColinWhy Ganymede? It’s All About the People“There are so many reasons why I enjoy working for Ganymede, but the most important one for me is the people I work with. We support, encourage, advise, coach, and have a laugh with each other every day to ensure we offer the best service to our clients and candidates. The management team plays a huge part in that, and the support I have been given, both in the workplace and in my personal life, has been incredible.Added to that is the fantastic commission structure, systems, and IT that make the job easier and mean we can fill vacancies quicker — and a head office that is a great place to work from.”Staying Motivated After 20 Years“Everyone knows that recruitment has lots of highs and lows, but placing a candidate is what drives and motivates me every day.”Evolution of Colin's pictures through the yearsKey Milestones and Turning Points“I was promoted to Assistant Recruitment Manager back in 2014, where I was managing a team of three recruitment consultants. As it turned out, this was a turning point in my career because I struggled to handle the pressures of managing a team and maintaining my own performance. So after a period of 22 months and with the support of the management team, I decided to return to my role of Principal Consultant. It shows that at Ganymede, the support is there to ensure you develop your career how you want to. If there is a route you take that doesn’t work out, then you can discuss and decide on an alternative — and I’ve never looked back.”Chris O'Connor, Operations Director in Recruitment commented:It has been my absolute pleasure to have worked alongside Col for his entire 20-year tenure with the group. I vividly remember us both joining the business back in 2005 – two fresh-faced and perhaps slightly naive recruitment novices eager to forge a career in a sector we knew precisely nothing about! Fast forward two decades, and despite the few extra wrinkles acquired along the way, Col's enthusiasm remains as infectious as ever. More importantly, throughout these years, he has consistently proven himself to be one of the very best in our field. You will be hard-pressed to find anyone with a negative word to say about Colin. He takes immense pride in delivering the very best for his customers, candidates, and colleagues alike. Past and present colleagues will undoubtedly tell you that it is a genuine pleasure to be on his team.Well done, Col – the recognition you will receive for this milestone is richly deserved. Here's to the next 20 years… and who knows, maybe in that time, we'll even see Manchester United challenge again! This is what Owen Hughes, Divisional Manager, had to say about Colin's anniversary:I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Colin every single day of my time here, and I can honestly say: anyone would be proud to do the same. He’s the first in, the last to leave, and sets a shining example of what it means to be a top-tier recruiter. His results speak for themselves.Call him the postman: Colin delivers, week in, week out, with unwavering consistency and high-level performance. In fact, he holds the record for the most contract recruitment margin billed by any individual in RTC Group history. He is not just a key member of the team; he is a cornerstone, a benchmark for what great recruitment looks like.Beyond the numbers, Colin is a true gentleman. His professionalism, humility and integrity have earned him the utmost respect and admiration from his colleagues. It is rare to find someone so highly thought of within the workplace. So here is to the man, the myth, the Red Devil, with form far better than his team. Congratulations on smashing through this incredible anniversary, Col. Legend status: well and truly secured. And remember… You’ll Never Walk Alone.Colin’s 20-year journey is a fantastic example of loyalty, passion and the value of finding the right environment to thrive in. A huge congratulations to Colin on this remarkable milestone. Here’s to continued success and many more achievements still to come.
